Mayor Bowser Pushes to Legalize Marijuana Sales
Updated On: Nov 27, 2018
On November 8, Mayor Bowser announced that she intends to introduce legislation legalizing the sale of marijuana in D.C.  That would expand D.C.'s law, which currently allows citizens to own and gift small amounts of marijuana but not sell it.  If the legislation is passed, it would follow a larger trend of marijuana legalization.  Ten states and Canada have legalized marijuana to date.

Proponets of the plan cite increased tax revenue and the elimination of black markets as benefits, however, others have expressed concern that legalized marijuana sales will increase marijuana use and with it marijuana related offenses, such as DUI.  The union will be monitoring the legislation to anticipate any issues should it be passed.
